The Thirsty Flowers

At the back of a yard, not yours and not ours

Lived a bed full of raggedy half dying flowers

For it had been more than three months and a quarter

Since Mad Jack McCann had bothered to water

An epic poem about brave flowers, leaving the garden of Mad Jack McCann for the promise of a better and wetter life!

The first children’s text I ever wrote, it was illustrated by Julie Knoblock (now Jules Madden) and published by Hardie Grant Egmont in 2006. It was reprinted with a new cover in 2013.

Launched at Books Illustrated

The Thirsty Flowers was launched at Books illustrated (owned by the two Anns), which at the time had premises at Gasworks in South Melbourne. It was a lovely spot and a memorable day . Here are some photos of Julie and me. She still makes beautiful art and is based in West Gippsland.

Rhythm and rhyme!

I recorded this little video for Scholastic about the job of writing a rhyming story, like The Thirsty Flowers.

My beautiful Charley Dog, hanging out with me and the flowers. I wrote this when Charley died.
